Each filter in the system serves a specific purpose to purify the water. The pre-filters and post-filters in RO systems typically last around 8 to 12 months between changes, while the original organic RO membranes can last up to 5 years.
 
The first filter in the system is the sediment filter, which effectively removes particles like sand, dirt, silt, and rust from the water. The sediment filter has a micron rating 5 and should be replaced annually, depending on the water quality. This helps improve the performance of the following filters, such as the carbon block or GAC filters.
 
The second stage is the organic activated carbon GAC filter. This filter is known for efficiently reducing chlorine taste and odor and the taste and odors of many organic chemicals and volatile organic compounds. Made with high-quality coconut shell carbon, it has a micron rating 5 and should be replaced annually, depending on the water quality.
 
The third stage is the organic original activated carbon block filter made of fine coconut shell carbon. It removes odors and tastes of many organic compounds, particularly chlorine. Due to its packed carbon cylinder block, the filter offers a much finer filtration of suspended particles and dirt. It has a micron rating 5 and should be replaced annually, depending on the water quality.
 
The fourth stage of the system is the reverse osmosis membrane, the main component of all 5-stage reverse osmosis units. Made with 100% organic fine thin film flat sheet, it has a 99% reduction rate of bacteria, pesticides, herbicides, and heavy metals from tap water. Its micron rating is less than 1/10000th of a micron, making it 620,000 times finer than a human hair, 2,500 times smaller than bacteria, and 20 times smaller than any virus. The membrane has a capacity of 50 to 80 gallons per day (15.8-19.6 liters per hour) and a 99% stabilized salt rejection. It meets the NSF/ANSI Standard 58.
 
The fifth and final stage is the reverse osmosis inline carbon filter compatible with the Ultima VII 5-Stage RO Systems. This filter, commonly known as a polishing filter, is made of high-quality coconut shell carbon. It helps stabilize the water's taste and removes bad taste and odors. Its dimensions are 10.7" x 2.3" and it should be replaced every 1-2 years.
